Therapeutic Phlebotomy

A quick and easy way to correct elevated hemoglobin and hematocrit.

What is Therapeutic Phlebotomy?

Some blood conditions and cancers cause our bodies to form too many blood cells, which can make the blood too "thick" or concentrated. This can also happen as a normal side effect of testosterone supplementation since testosterone stimulates the bone marrow to produce blood cells similar to the way it stimulates the muscle cells to produce more muscle.

This "thickening" of the blood is a problem because it makes the blood harder to push through small blood vessels like the ones in your heart muscle and brain. As a result, excess "thickness" of the blood can increase your risk for heart attack or stroke.

What's the solution? The easiest solution is to remove some of the blood, which your body replaces in the short term with fluids. This replacement with fluids dilutes the remaining blood cells back to a normal concentration.

Therapeutic phlebotomy is an easy procedure that's done for patients whose labs demonstrate unsafe elevated levels of blood cells (hemoglobin or hematocrit). It takes about 20 - 30 minutes and is performed in our infusion room in the office. The blood that we remove is discarded.

If this is a procedure you need, we can make it fast and easy. Contact Us to learn more.
