Chelation is the process of binding and removing specific metals and minerals from the body through administration of a “chelator” such as EDTA, DMPS, or DMSA. It is commonly used in alternative medicine to help rid the body of toxins, and to reduce cardiac risk including narrowing of the arteries.
The following summary from the National Institute of Health (NIH) website describes results of a large chelation therapy study in patient’s who’d had a previous heart attack (the TACT study):
Patients with diabetes, who made up approximately one-third of the 1,708 TACT participants, had a 41 percent overall reduction in the risk of any cardiovascular event; a 40 percent reduction in the risk of death from heart disease, nonfatal stroke, or nonfatal heart attack; a 52 percent reduction in recurrent heart attacks; and a 43 percent reduction in death from any cause.
For patients concerned about their body’s burden of toxic metals and minerals, toxic minerals / metals testing can be performed and if needed, a chelation protocol can be formulated.
